Description:

BATTLE-DAMAGED CIVIL WAR DRUM WITH 51ST INDIANA DRUMMER IDENTIFICATION
A rarely encountered Civil War drum with period painted identification and a period card noting its ownership within the drum itself. The wooden drum stands 14" tall and 16 1/2" wide, with both hoops present, stringing, and leather fittings, though the skins were replaced long ago. One side bears black painted identification: "GEO. W. MANLEY CO A 51ST REGT. IND. VOL. INFT''Y 61 TO 66" The maker''s label pasted within identifies the maker as "William Kilbourn Successor to George Kilbourn" in Albany, N.Y. A period card with the drum reads: "Drum carried through the Civil War by Drum Maj. G. W. Manley Co. A 51st Ind. Vol. Inf. Hole shot through at Stone[s] River". A jagged 1" wide hole appears just above the bottom hoop to the left of Manley''s painted ownership label. George W. Manley was an 18 year-old farmer when he enlisted with the 51st Indiana Vols. as a drummer on July 6, 1863 and mustered out in Texas on Dec. 13, 1865. This drum was likely his predecessor''s at Stone''s River, or Manley was engaged near Stones River when the drum was struck. Additionally, Manley was either detached to the 15th Indiana or absent sick when his regiment was captured at Cedar Bluff. He would have been present in the pursuit of Hood, at Franklin, and in the Nashville and Chattanooga campaigns. Sold with copies of Manley''s records.
