THADDEUS S. C. LOWE
(1832-1913) American balloonist whose Union balloon corps tracked enemy movements, most notably at Fair Oaks where observations directed artillery and prevented a Union rout. Fine content manuscript L.S. 2pp. 8vo., New York, Feb. 26, 1868, an important business strategy letter to his partner James T. Ames, concerning the imminent installation of his ice compression machine aboard a steamship. In part: "...I will look after the packing and send as soon as possible - things here are working finely, and I have arrangement so far completed as to be able to form the Steamship company tomorrow or the next day. The West India Company also is progressing, and both will soon be ready to advance on machinery very soon. I have given Chenery written notice that the first installment of machinery was ready for his company, and that the cash would be required next week, which if he don't have ready, will, according to contract forfeit his interest. Should he not do so there are several parties ready to take his place...I think it will be well to decide upon the engine best adapted for working two feed & one condencing [sic] pump, as, when we are ready they cannot be built too fast. I have heard from Capt. Hatch and answered his communication. I shall go to Chicopee early next week and if at any time I am required sooner, I will come. Please let me know if you will act as one of the direction [sic, directors] of the Steamship Co. temperarily [sic]...As capital comes in to take the place of fancy directors, they will have the privilege of resigning...". In very good condition.
