JOHN D. MORRIS Virginia born Texas settler, son of Richard Morris, served in Texas politics and military during Texas's secession from Mexico and after. Participated in the Battle of San Jacinto, the Comanche fight at San Antonio, and others. Later fought with General John S. Williams for Kentucky in the Confederate Army. Fine content A.L.S., "John D. Morris," 3pp. 4to., Christian County, Tn., Mar. 10, 1845, to George Blow Jr. of Norfolk. Morris discusses the proposed annexation of Texas, in part: "I have but one moment this morning to announce to you my safe return from Texas and shake hands with you upon the passage of the annexation resolutions in the U.S. Senate. There seems to be some apprehension about the consent of Texas. There is I tell you no doubt about how the people will jump at the proposition...there is but little change in San Antonio- except that many of our best friends among the Americans are no longer there...You will see the same amusements...fandangoes, cock fights, &c &c..."
