Description:

REPUBLIC OF TEXAS BROADSIDE
Rare broadside, 1p., oversized folio, signed in type at bottom by one Austin, R. Plummer, Dec. 22, 1857, headed "SEE WHO VOTED FOR IT. A PLAIN STATEMENT OF FACTS." The broadside refers to Plummer's claim that he purchased Stuart Perry's rights to a debt owed by the Republic of Texas. Perry had allowed Texas to make use of his ship for fifteen months in the transport of troops and supplies during the revolution, under the agreement that the Texas government would repay the debt when able. Perry was never paid, though the Texas Legislature approved a resolution on March 15, 1848, allowing that Perry's claim to the money was valid. Once the United States government agreed to pay $10 million worth of Texas debt in exchange for territory during the Compromise of 1850, Plummer expected the bill to be fulfilled. In part: "... I became the purchaser-- an innocent purchaser-- for a full and valid consideration...I do think it is time I was paid...". Plummer also sets forth the names of those legislators involved in the approval and delay of payments due to him. A few tiny toned spots, else very good.
