(TEXAS) HENRY E. MCCULLOCH
(1816 - 1895) Soldier in the Texas Revolution, a Texas Ranger, and Confederate brigadier general in command of Texas' defensive forces who led a brigade in an attempt to relieve Vicksburg. Manuscript D.S., 2pp. legal folio, Gonzales Co., Republic of Texas, May 28, 1844, acknowledgement by Horace Eggleston that he holds in trust certain lands for the children of James B. Patrick. Also signed by HORACE EGGLESTON. In March of 1836, Eggleston was living in Gonzales when the order was given by Sam Houston to burn the town, in advance of the the Mexican Army's expected arrival. Horace and his second wife lost their home, mercantile business, and all supplies they could not carry with them on the 'Runaway Scrape.' Thereafter, Eggleston stayed with General Houston, and fought for victory at San Jacinto. Years later, Captain Eggleston commanded a company in the Vasquez campaign in 1842 and was a member of Captain J. C. Henry's Company in the Woll Campaign. Evenly toned, very good.
