Description:

(TEXAS) BEN MCCULLOCH AND OTHER TEXAS PATRIOTS
BEN MCCULLOCH (1811 – March 7, 1862) Soldier in the Texas Revolution, a Texas Ranger, a major-general in the Texas militia and thereafter a major in the United States Volunteers during the Mexican–American War, sheriff of Sacramento County, a U.S. marshal, and a brigadier-general in the army of the Confederate States during the Civil War. He owned at least 91 slaves. McCulloch was killed during the Battle of Pea Ridge. An extraordinarily rare and fine association signed document, 2pp. 4to., Gonzales Co., Texas, Sep. 18, 1838, a deed in which fellow Texas hero JOHN J. TUMLINSON (1804-1853) sells a tract of land in Washington County, signed by Tumlinson and witnessed by McCulloch! In the document, Tumlinson holds himself: "...firmly bound Pleasant S. Barnett...in the penal sum of Six thousand Dollars, lawful money of the Republic of Texas..." in connection with the purchase of a tract of land by Tumlinson, referred to as a "colonist", in Washington County. Tumlinson signs adding his "seal" at conclusion, with McCulloch adding his signature "B. McCulloch" as a witness beneath those of two others. Notarized at conclusion by Ezkiel Williams the same day. A small blank section of the integral leaf is lost, else in very good condition. JOHN JACK TUMLINSON, JR. (1804–1853) was a DeWitt colonist, the first Texas Ranger captain, a and participant in the Texas Revolution. After John Tumlinson's wife and son died he resettled in Clinton near his headright on the Guadalupe River, just north of the site of present Cuero. In July 1842 he married Delaney Asher; after her death he married her sister, Mary Ann (Polly), in August 1849. John was one of eight Tumlinson men who participated in the Texas Revolution. In 1835 as first lieutenant in Robert M. Coleman's company he participated in the battle of Gonzales and the siege of Bexar. Under orders of the provisional government to defend settlers from Indian raids he organized another company of rangers who defended what is now known as Tumlinson Blockhouse. Tumlinson served until August 1836, when he resigned. EZKIEL WILLIAMS (unknown–1844) was also an important figure in the Texas Revolution. He was one of the Old Eighteen who refused to surrender the Gonzales "Come and Take It" cannon back to the Mexicans. When Francisco de Castañeda and his men arrived on the west bank of the Guadalupe River on September 29, 1835, high water and the eighteen militiamen in Gonzales prevented Castaneda and his men from crossing the river and recovering the cannon. The ensuing battle occurred on Williams's land and precipitated the Texas Revolution. Williams was appointed a captain in the Texas Revolutionary Army. After the formation of the Republic of Texas, Williams and other important men from Gonzales, including James Tumlinson Sr., Francis Berry, Robert Smith, James Tumlinson Jr., and John Tumlinson, unanimously voted for Sam Houston for president and Mirabeau Buonaparte Lamar for vice-president. On September 5, 1836, Williams also attested that some of the men from Gonzales were in favor of the Republic of Texas being "attached to the United States of the north." Unfortunately, Williams did not live long enough to see the annexation of Texas. He died on December 13, 1844, in Gonzales. A document associating three Texas heroes!
