Description:

(TEXAS) ALEXANDER W. TERRELL
(1827 - 1912) Confederate brigadier general, fought in several major battles as part of the Red River Campaign including the Battle of Mansfield. Terrell was assigned to duty as a brigadier general by Gen. E. Kirby Smith but was never officially appointed by Jefferson Davis. Terrell fled to Mexico after the war and briefly served Emperor Maximilian as a battalion commander. In 1866 he returned to Texas, where he practiced the law in Houston. Very rare signed imprint: 'Speech of Hon. A. W. Terrell Delivered at Bastrop October 8th A.D. 1886 The Campaign', Austin, 1886. 34pp. 8vo., the text of Terrell's speech railing against tariffs and government land deals with transcontinental railroads. Terrell inscribes the inside of the front cover: 'Austin Oct. 28, 1886 with compliments of A. W. Terrell'. Part of the front cover is torn and is slightly discolored, having adhered to the first page of text, else very good. A very rare imprint in itself, with only two copies apparently existing, both held by Texas institutions.
