Description:

TENNESSEE KLANSMAN'S APPLICATION FORMS
Good group of three documents, all related to the efforts of a John Foster Sigge to join the Collierville, Tennessee chapter of the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan. Includes: Partly-printed D.S., 2pp. 4to., Collierville, June 18, 1924, a questionnaire partially completed by Sigge prior to his application to join the Klan. The form has spaces for Sigge to list his age, weight, and place of birth, his occupation as a self-employed sawyer, his religion as a Methodist, his marital status, his number of children, and more. The form also inquires: "Do you owe any kind of allegiance to any foreign nation, government, institution, sect, people, ruler, or person" and "Do you honestly believe in the practice of real fraternity". The bottom of the first page lists seven acquaintances of Sigge who could be relied upon to verify the information he provides, while the verso bears spaces for two individuals to write endorsements of the applicant, although these have not been completed. Sigge signs at the conclusion of the first page. Shows folds, slight foxing and staple holes, else very good. WITH: Printed D.S., 1p. oblong 8vo., Collierville, June 23, 1924, a "Petition for Citizenship in the Invisible Empire, Knights of the Ku Klux Klan", featuring an oath that Sigge is required to sign in order to be considered for membership, in part: "... I solemnly declare, assert and affirm on oath, that I have never been banished from nor denied citizenship in the Invisible Empire... I have never committed the crime of treason, rape nor willful murder... I am a white Gentile and a man of good morals and of respectable vocation... In order to prove my worthiness to receive and bear the exalted honor which I eagerly crave and which Your Excellency alone can confer, I most faithfully and seriously pledge myself to be tested and tried; I am ready and willing to undergo any test and endure any ordeal which Your Excellency may impose, and if I should prove the coward, falter or fail in any test or trial, I will readily and willingly accept as my portion a deportation from the portal of the Invisible Empire..." Sigge signs at the conclusion, with "Nighthawk" Fred E. Rutledge countersigning. Shows folds, staple holes and a small tear, else very good. WITH: Printed D.S., 2pp. oblong 8vo., Collierville, an "Application for Citizenship in the Invisible Empire, Knights of the Ku Klux Klan", signaled and dated by Sigge at the conclusion but with the spaces for endorsements by confirmed Klansmen left blank, and the receipt for the application fee still attached. Shows two small holes, else very good. Three pieces.
