Description:

SURRENDER AT VICKSBURG AND PURSUIT OF JOHNSTON MUSTER ROLL
A fine content war-date partly-printed D.S., 2pp. folio, Co. C, 67th Indiana Vols., Carrollton, Aug. 31, 1863, listing all of the men who were enlisted in the regiment to that date and their commanding officers Frank Emerson and Simeon H. Crane. The remarks read, in part: ‘…Company ‘C' 67th Ind Vols Infy. Provost Guards 13th Army Corps were at Vicksburg until its surrender July 4th 1863. July 5th, they started for Jackson Miss in pursuit of the rebel Gen Johnston & his forces and marched to Jackson after the surrender of that place they returned to Vicksburg…' Tape repairs to the verso along with multiple splits and tears, otherwise just good. Vicksburg was a major defeat to Joseph Johnston, leading to a retreat to Jackson. Jefferson Davis considered firing Johnston for this defeat, but since he was still a popular figure, he remained in command until the end of the war.
