Description:

SURGEON OF THE 54TH MASSACHUSETTS DESCRIBES RACE RIOTS IN CHARLESTON
Excellent group of six A.L.S.s by Surgeon Joshua B. Treadwell of the 54th Massachusetts (Colored) Regiment, 24pp. 8vo., July 14 to Aug. 19, 1865 while the regiment was in Charleston and Mount Pleasant where it would soon muster-out. Treadwell, who had joined the regiment on July 1, 1865, writes his sister in Boston. In small part: "...considerable excitement among the officers and men...Last Monday Gen. Gilmore issued an order for the immediate muster out of the 54th; but finding that he had no authority...he yesterday countermanded it...[Surgeon Charles E.] Briggs is endeavoring to get leave of absence...he intended to resign...he will do well to take his old boots and leave [Briggs had been reprimanded for circumcising and burning the penis of Pvt. James Riley who had been apprehended for having illicit relations with a mare]...charges to which as he explains them to me he cannot clear himself of [Briggs was never tried]...Charleston has been very inquiet during the last week...fights between white citizens and black citizens have been the order of the day...all classes and parties are [involved?]...went to a negro party last night...This will probably end my military career...". Much more content concerning the regiment's movement, local news, and the scheming of the despicable Dr. Briggs. Overall very good. Letters from members of this famous regiment are quite rare.
