Description:

JOHN PEGRAM AND RICHARD S. EWELL APPROVE A FURLOUGH FOR A 49TH VA. SOLDIER.
A combination of two rare endorsements on a single war-date document, a request for a 15 day furlough from 2nd Lt. R. K. Christian of the 49th Virginia. Christian has written his appeal from camp on Feb. 18, 1864 to Col. Robert H. Chilton, Chief of Staff, mentioning that he had not had a furlough since his enlistment in April, 1861. On the verso appears first an A.E.S. of Lt. Col. CHARLES B. CHRISTIAN who approves the request and mentions the strength of the company. Christian was one of the "Immortal 600" used as human shields in Charleston Harbor. JOHN PEGRAM (1832-1865) Confederate brigadier general killed at Hatcher's Run within two weeks of being married (with the funeral taking place in the same church as the marriage) signs an approving endorsement, and RICHARD S. EWELL pens and signs an endorsement likewise approving. The document had severe condition problems, now stabilized: much brown spotting, and weak folds have been repaired but at the cost of a few words in Ewell's endorsement, and his first initial. Pegram's use of "adversity ink" has caused his signature to substantially fade, yet is is "all there" and in life this document appears better than could be depicted here. Estimated accordingly.
