BURTON (1888-1964) Associate Justice of the Supreme Court who played a pivotal role in securing the Court's unanimous decision in "Brown v. Board of Education". T.L.S., 1p. 8vo., Washington, D.C., Dec. 1, 1958, to an Erwin T. Koch, thanking his correspondent for his Thanksgiving and Christmas messages, and extending his own. Shows original mailing folds, else very good to fine. The original transmittal envelope is also present. WITH: JAMES F. BYRNES (1879-1972) Associate Justice and Secretary of State under Truman, also represented South Carolina in the House and Senate. T.L.S., 1p. 4to., Columbia, Oct. 6, 1956, to Dr. Weldon T. Myers, in small part: "...When I was invited to go to Vermont and discuss the problems involved in the segregation decision [almost certainly "Brown v. Board of Education"], I felt it was my duty to accept. Those people know little of our problems and I am sure they can better appreciate what it means to us..."
