Description:

SUBSTITUE BROKER CARD
A very interesting and unusual piece of Civil War ephemera, a 3" x 2" business card for "HAYNES, WEBB & CO. GENERAL SUBSTITUTE BROKERS" located on South Fifth Street in Philadelphia. The bottom caption promises: "The highest Cash price paid to SUBSTITUTES & VOLUNTEERS, as soon as mustered into the service. Principals furnished with Substitutes on liberal terms." The system of bounties and the allowance for substitutes gave birth to a brisk business in obtaining substitutes to those who could afford to pay fees of approximately $300. The system gave rise to a good deal of anger among the working classes who came to view the conflict as a "Rich man's war, but a poor man's fight." Mounted to a piece of book board, light toning, else very good condition.
