STEWART VAN VLIET
(1815-1901) U.S. Army officer who served in the Mexican American War under Zachary Taylor and Winfield Scott, later served as a Union general during the Civil War and Chief Quartermaster of the Army of the Potomac. Three items: a war-date A.L.S. on ‘Quarter Master's Office' letterhead, New York, July 30, 1864, to Brig. Gen. John T. Sprague, in part: ‘…I have the authority to send Agents of the United States to any point on Gov't. vessels on their presenting their credentials…'. Expertly inlaid. WITH: a partly-printed war-date D.S. 1p. legal folio, [n.p. but New York], May 26, 1863, a ‘List of Quartermaster Stores' noting bales of hay, boldly signed at the conclusion. File holes at right, folds, otherwise very good. WITH: a pre-war A.L.S. 1p. 4to., St. Louis, Oct. 1, 1851, to a clothing firm in Boston regarding his ‘measure' and requesting prices. Expertly inlaid. Three pieces.
