Description:

STERLING PRICE
(1809 - 1867) Confederate major general who captured Lexington, and fought at Iuka, Corinth and Red River as well. The war left him a broken and impoverished man. War-date manuscript L.S. as major general commanding the District of Tennessee, 1p. 4to., Tupelo, Sep. 5, 1862 to Mississippi Gov. JOHN J. PETTUS (1813-1867) who apparently has docketed the document on the verso. Good content reading, in part: '...I have issued the necessary orders for the supply of the Militia ...with Subsistence, Camp & Garrison equipage, arms & ammunition. A copy of these orders are enclosed [not present...' Fine. Price was reinforcing the militia in anticipation of engaging Union forces under Rosecrans. He would do so at the Battle of Iuka twelve days after signing this letter. Having failed to await the return of Van Dorn's forces, Price took a beating in the lopsided battle and failed to link up with Bragg's forces.
