829. JOHN STEINBECK (1902 - 1968) American author and one of the greatest fiction writers of the twentieth century. His works include The Grapes of Wrath, Of Mice and Men, and East of Eden. For his efforts he was awarded the Pulitzer and Nobel prizes. Very rare signed book, Steinbeck's epic The Grapes of Wrath, The Viking Press, New York, 1939, with dust jacket with $2.75 price and printed "FIRST EDITION" on flap of dust jacket, original oatmeal cloth, titles and decoration in dark red to the covers and spine, binding quite tight, just the slightest trace of a paperclip impression and remaining metal trace at top of half-title page, very light soiling to fore edges, otherwise fine in very good dust jacket which bears light wear and a 2" tears at fold between rear cover and rear flap. Boldly inscribed on the page opposite front pastedown: "For Joseph Dunninger John Steinbeck". Joseph Dunninger (1892-1975), otherwise known as "The Amazing Dunninger", was an American magician, one of the most famous and proficient mentalists of all time, a pioneer performer of magic on radio and television and close friend and associate of Harry Houdini.
