830. HEINRICH HEINE (1797-1856) German Romantic poet and writer, author of Der Buch der Leider. Excessively rare, exceptional content A.Ms. (unsigned), 1p. 4to., [n.p., n.d.], in German with numerous holograph emendations and deletions. A draft of a strongly-worded patriotic verse, in full: "The French and Russians belong to the land, the water belongs to the British. We own the Reich and no one can challenge this; Here we have this hegemony, our great and indisputable sewing together of states, whereas other peoples have developed on flat earth; Be vigilant every day...else our soul has shed her feathers...and becomes wooden and leather-like". On verso is a docket from Heine's nephew Ludwig Embden, stating that the verse was written entirely in Heine's hand. Possibly a later piece, as Heine, increasingly bitter about his fate and particularly his lengthy illness, turned from Romanticism to fervent, almost jingoistic nationalism and sarcastic verse. Certainly worthy of further research. A bit of chipping at corners, well clear of text. Very good condition, boldly penned. $4,000 - 6,000
