Description:

STATES RIGHTS GIST
(1831 - 1864) Confederate brigadier general who commanded a division at Chickamauga and Missionary Ridge, led his own brigade in the Atlanta campaign, killed in action leading his men at Franklin. Extremely rare war date A.L.S. "S. R. Gist Brig Genl Comdg" 1p. 4to. Charleston, S.C. Apr. 2, 1863 to Governor Millidge L. Bonham requesting that he "...recommend to the Legislature, to rescind their action in relation to the elections in certain Confd Regs [in] this State. No one is better aware of the in-operativeness of the Law, and the pernicious effects of an attempt to execute its provisions than yourself...". The issue of companies electing their own officers, as was common in local militias, proved a major thorn in the side of professional soldiers who clearly understood the problem of the most popular rather than the most qualified officers in positions of responsibility. Moderate uneven toning, marginal fold separation, else fine condition.
