Description:

ROBERT E. LEE
(1807 - 1870) Confederate General and commander of the Army of Northern Virginia, arguably the most brilliant commander of field armies in American history. Superb association post-bellum A.L.S., 4pp. 4to., Jan. 19, 1866, Lexington [Washington and Lee University], to his wartime aide-de-camp Col. Charles Marshall. Lee writes to update Marshall on his life, and specifically thanks the Baltimore lawyer for donating funds and home furnishings. In part: "...The furniture is very much to my liking. It is handsome and good...I do not know what to say to those kind ladies who paid for it. I am deeply sensible of their kindness & consideration and fully appreciate the motive which activated them; but cannot help regretting that I have been the cause of so much expense. I have so many evidences of the regard of the Baltimoreans...I feel so rich from the deposit you have made to my credit in the Bank of Baltimore...None can wish you more success & happiness than myself. Mrs. Lee, Mildred & Custis join me in kindest regards...". At war's end, Lee was left wth only a small fraction of the wealth he possessed prior to hostilities, and in many ways depended on the generosity of friends and sympathizers. Minor folds, fine.
