Description:

STATEMENT OF THE SUGAR CROP MADE IN LOUISIANA, 1860
An interesting nineteenth century treatise by Pierre [P.A.] Champomier, (New Orleans: Cook, Young & Co., 1860), 46pp. sm. 8vo., an informative annual report in both English and French that gives insight into the agricultural dynamics of slavery in Louisiana. Additionally, this text is considered a historically important pre-Civil War source, as it furnishes detailed coverage of individual plantations rather than simply parish-wide aggregate figures. The names of hundreds of individual planters are given, making the text an unparalleled pre-war reference. This exceedingly rare book remains in very good condition, in original publisher's wraps, light cover wear generally clean and tight throughout. An important Louisiana historical document relating to its economy and use of slavery in that era.
