Description:

Superb and very rare sword with scabbard carried by an NCO member of the notorious SS-Standarte 'Germania'. The sword is 35.5 in. long overall with a 30.75 in. blade. Fittings are nickle-finished, the chappe on one side bearing SS runes in relief above a pebbled background, the opposite side displaying a Gothic 'G' for 'Germania' with the same pebble background. Standard 'D' guard and black celluloid grip with tight wire wrap completely intact. The blade is bright and incredibly clean, etched with oak leaves nearly its entire length. One side of the blade further reads: 'SS-Standarte 'Germania' in relief, the reverse reading: 'Gehorsam bis in den Tod!' ('Loyal until death!'). WKC maker's mark appears just behind the SS emblem on the chappe. The scabbard is nearly untouched, bearing only a very few very scattered tiny chips and a surface scuff or two. The engraving on one side of the sword is perfectly straight, while the engraving on the other side is slightly askew. An absolutely beautiful sword, in fine condition. The SS-Standarte "Germania" was established in 1934 as SS-Standarte 3/VT from within the Politische Bereitschaft "Hamburg". It was renamed SS-Standarte 'Germania' in 1936. The unit took part in the annexation of Austria and was responsible for security during Mussolini's visit to Germany. It later served as a guard regiment in Prague until July 1939, and took part in the invasion of Poland attached to the 14th Army.
