Description:

SS CHAINED DAGGER
Chained SS dagger with scabbard, 8.5 in. blade and 13.5 in. overall. Possibly the most desireable piece of any dagger collection. This example has the usual SS runes button top and centered to the grip, it is original and mounted slightly raised, so possibly reset, with the silver-washed national eagle, also showing signs that it has been possibly been reset or replaced. The national eagle shows some wear to wreath revealing the copper base metal. The black grip shows some cracks and splits that have been sanded and possibly filled in places, then refinished. The grooves of the upper and lower crossguards are still quite sharp and deep. Some run marks on the blade which is engraved with the SS motto: ‘Meine Ehre heisst Treue' (‘Loyalty is my honor'), which is dark and distinct. Marked by maker Carl Eickhorn of Solingen on the reverse at the ricasso. The original scabbard is well fitted with the the scabbard fittings, which are showing a very nice finish, the scabbard looks to have had a very thin layer of replacement paint, expertly applied and possibly period, and looking like the original paint in most places. Some areas of underlying chipping and a few signs of wear along the edges can be seen. The nickel fittings also bear some oxidation where the plating has worn, but they remain overall very good. Possible replacement screws on the nickel fittings. The individual links of the chain display surprisingly good detail, properly marked with runic hallmark on the reverse, and all undoubtedly original to the scabbard. Extreme wear is evident in the upper scabbard fitting under the first link. The scabbard tip has been crushed almost flat from below and exhibits a small split to the halves. A few of the links bear a notable patina and oxidation. Overall, a good example of this desirable early SS dagger.
