Description:

Good example of a Spencer Model 1860 repeating cavalry carbine, .56 caliber, 20 1/4" barrel, 39" overall, utilizing the world's first military metallic cartridge repeating action. The weapon is marked with the serial number "22025"on the frame just behind the breech, with the maker's mark "Spencer Repeating Rifle Co. Boston Ma. Pat'd March 6 1860" just before the breech. Inspector's initials appear throughout, and a U.S. Army inspector's cartouche is visible on the left-hand side of the butt just behind the cavalry-style saddle ring. The metal components show a mix of dull-grey and brown patinas, with some shallow surface pitting visible to the left-hand side of the frame. The loading mechanism is tight and functions properly, and the hammer cocks and fires smartly. The wood furniture shows some handling marks commensurate with period use. The elevation slider on the rear sight is loose and does not remain in a raised position. The seven-round tube magazine shows a small crack adjacent to the follower retention screw at the end but otherwise appears to function as built. The bore shows some grime or minor oxidation, but the rifling remains strong with crisp lands and grooves. NRA grade: very good.
