Description:

SPANISH CIVIL WAR
An outstanding offering of twenty-three identical badge-pins issued in support of the Republican faction fighting during the Spanish Civil War (1936 - 1939), sold and distributed at rallies held throughout the United States. Each pin consists of a 24mm brass planchet, deeply engraved with the Republican flag and set within two laurel branches. Beneath the flag is the date: "18 JULIO 1937". Each pin is hand-painted and the fasteners are hand soldered to the verso. These pins were found among the property belonging to the estate of noted radical attorney LEO GALLAGHER (1887 - 1963), known throughout his nearly 40-year practice as a defender of Labor Unionists, minorities, political activists and the poor. On July 18, 1937, several events were held throughout the world in support of the Republican cause, including a major rally held at New York's Madison Square Garden. Twenty thousand people attended a ceremony in which the key-note speaker, Dr. Enrique Carlos, Minister Plenipotentiary in charge of the Spanish Embassy (also housed in M.S.G), made an emotional appeal for aid and assistance. It was at this very event the badge-pins were sold and distributed, especially to raise much needed funds for the Abraham Lincoln Brigade. All twenty-three badge-pins are in very good to fine condition. An important discovery with impeccable provenance!
