Description:

SOVIET TEACHING AID SHOWS THE IMPORT OF WESTERN SLAVES
An exceedingly rare Russian teaching aid covering the trade of African slaves to the New World, ca. 1980, designed to instill anti-Western sentiment in Soviet schoolchildren during the Cold War. The poster, 33 x 23 in., shows a line of slaves disembarking their slaver's ships just after the Middle Passage, chained by the necks and wrists and being whipped by a white overseer. Other sections show lined-up slaves on an elevated platform, possibly being sold at auction or lined up for inspection. Juxtaposing the sadness of the foreground, the background depicts an opulent Spanish-inspired villa, certainly constructed via slave labor. The bottom margin bears the publishing information of a local printing house in Kalinin (later renamed Tver), and the lower-left corner indicates the posters are designed for Russian sixth graders. The message is clear: as the Western world decried the Soviet Union's crackdown on freedoms, this poster was an attempt by the Soviets to highlight the West's reliance on slavery and the atrocities related to it. Strong vertical crease, some creases to the edges, the left and right edges reinforced with brown tape. Still very good condition, and certainly acceptable for display.
