Description:

SOUTH CAROLINA SECESSION COCKADE
A rare relic of the earliest days of the Civil War, a South Carolina "secession cockade" which was worn on a hat or vest by men, women and children to show their support for secession and the the cause of the South. Our example measures 3 1/2" across and is made of finely woven red and white silk, partly backed on the verso. It is adorned with a brass button bearing the Seal of South Carolina with the maker's mark of British manufacturers Van Wart & Son, who also manufactured uniform buttons for the Confederacy. Heavily soiled, yet completely intact and a fine example. Secession cockades first appeared in South Carolina and soon became popular throughout the South. Later in the war they were often made of black cloth in order to mourn the dead.
