760. SAMUEL FRANCIS SMITH (1808-1895) American clergyman and poet, author of our nation hymn "America" (1832), otherwise known as "My Country 'Tis of Thee". A.Ms.S. "S.F. Smith, D.D., author of 'America'", 1p. 4to., [n.p.], May 31, 1892, his "other" famous poem, "Decoration Day", five verses of four lines each, commencing: "Grateful, the pious feast we keep, In memory of the dead; And where the valiant soldiers sleep Their honors o'er their bed..." Some faults: ink faded a bit, signature an top 1 1/2" of document bearing staining from old glue on verso, old fold repairs on verso, recipient's name taped to top of document, just good. $200-300
