223. SLAVERY IN MARYLAND, 1816 Scarce A.D.S. "Jn. S. Harding / Foreman" of the Grand Jury of Frederick County, Maryland, 1p. oblong 8vo. [n.p.], "March Term 1816", an official legal document in which the Grand Jury rules in a case of assault and battery involving a slave owned by a judge of the court. Grand Jury foreman Harding reports: "We the grand Inquest for the body of Frederick County do present Francis Dugan for comiting [sic] an assault and Battery on Negro Abraham the Slave & property of Judge Shriver on the 31st day of January last by Information of Lewis Touhe & Jacob Shayer...". Docketed on verso, with manuscript listing of court costs. Uniformly age-toned and lightly stained at bottom edge, otherwise in very good condition. $300 - 400
