(Slave Cloth) Fascinating A.L.S. 1p. 4to., Petersburg, Mar. 12,1862 William H. Crow writes to Messrs. McGee & Williams. In part: I send you a sample of 7/8 - 8oz. Osnaburg [cloth] - They are superior... a could not get a single bale of any kind... I have an order from a Gent in Richmond to get him 10 Bales sheeting & shirting and 5 osnaburgs Osnaburg was an inexpensive, simple woven beige cloth widely used to clothe slaves. A 4in x 2in sample of the cloth is stitched to the letter. Certainly a rare item.
