Description:

413. SIX POUND CONFEDERATE-USED CANISTER ROUND FROM GETTYSBURG An especially rare Gettysburg battlefield pickup, a U.S. 3.67" six pounder canister round captured by the Confederates and recovered from the field shortly after the battle. The round, 6 3/4" long overall, has a crimped tin cover nailed to the wood fitting at bottom, all of which contains the deadly iron balls within. Fired on July 2nd by Confederate Capt. Latham and Garden's batteries, the only batteries in the entire battle capable of firing such a round, located on South Confederate Ave., and engaged with the Federal guns of Capt. Smith's 4th New York Battery and Capt. George Winslow's Battery D, 1st New York, which were located just above Devil's Den. Fine condition. From the noted collection of John Gieselman, a Gettysburg collector of relics from the 1920's, on who carefully documented the vast majority of his finds. Obtained directly from noted Gettysburg dealers, The Horse Soldier, whose expertise in arms, projectiles and relics is unimpeachable. Canister was an artilleryman's weapon of last resort. It was effective only at short range, and its effect was much like a shotgun, spreading a pattern of balls across a wide which cut down everything in their path. $2,500-3,500
