Description:

SILVER SAAR TABLE MEDAL ISSUED BY JOSEF BURCKEL
Very large and impressive 6 1/2" sterling silver table medal honoring the plebiscite which returned the Saar region to German control, with a presentation engraving by Gauleiter JOSEF BURCKEL...probably to Adolf Hitler! On the obverse, the medal bears an image of a standing coal miner and is marked: "Deutsch die Saar Immerdar" ("The Saar is German Forever"). The reverse shows a simple map of the region and is marked: "Volksabstimmung im Saargebiet 13.1.1935" ("Referendum in the Saar area 13.1.1935"). The rim of this 9.8 ounce medal is hallmarked by the maker and bears a "925" purity stamp. Of the greatest interest is the hand-engraved motto along the rim: "OUR FUHRER ADOLF HITLER IN THANKFULNESS AND LOYALTY J. BURCKEL". Fine condition. We can find no other tablke medals of this size - only a smaller version of 32mm. with no such inscription. We feel quite certain that this one-off piece was cast and engraved solely for presentation by Burckel to Hitler. JOSEF BURKEL (1895-1944) was a Nazi Germany politician and a member of the the Reichstag. He was an early member of the Nazi party and was influential in the rise of the National Socialist movement. An energetic organizer in the National Socialist movement of the Saar-Palatinate from 1925, the former schoolmaster rose through the ranks to become Gauleiter for the region in 1934. In 1935, Hitler placed Burckel in charge of the reintegration of the province.
