49. WILLIAM T. SHERMAN (1820-1891) Union major general declared by the press to be "insane", he led his army in their March to the Sea, taking Atlanta, Savannah and Columbia along the way. Superb, oversize S.P. approx. 7 1/2" x 12" b/w, an excellent three-quarter length standing portrait of Sherman in uniform with sash, epaulets, sword and hat, his hand on his hip, signed at left: "W. T. Sherman General New York Feb. 8, 1889". But for a few tiny specks on the image, condition is fine. With period inscription on verso, nicely framed (no backstamp visible).
