546. JAMES S. SHERMAN (1855 - 1912) Vice President who served under William H. Taft, died while in office. Lot of two T.L.S.'s as Vice President on official letterhead, each 1p. 4to., Washington and Utica, Oct. 28, 1912 (two days before his death) and Aug. 16, 1910, the former letter ironically sending thanks for birthday greetings, the 1910 letter reading in part: "...No public man seems to be free from the slanders of blatherskites, yet, when they are apparently so unfounded...they do little harm...". The 1910 letter bears mounting traces on verso, the 1912 letter is fine. $300 - 400
