Lot 699
699. SHAY'S REBELLION Manuscript D.S., 1p. legal folio, Sherburne, [Mass.] Feb. 17, 1787, from the Assessors of the town of Sherburn to the town tax collector, Nathaniel Holbrook ordering him to "levy and collect of the several persons named ine [sic] the List herewith Committed unto you Each one his Respective proportion therein..." A fascinating document written in the immediate aftermath of Shay's Rebellion. Notwithstanding popular protests against seizures of property for delinquent taxes in many quarters of the state, the town assessors here still authorized such forced sales: "...if any person shall refuse or neglect to pay the Sum he is assessed in Sd List to Distrain [seize] the good or Chattels of such person to the value thereof, and the Distress so taken you are to keep the Space of four Days at the Cost and Charge of the owner, and if the owner do[es] not pay the sum so Assessed within the four days then you are to sell at publick Vendue the Distress so taken for the payment thereof..." Light toning at weak folds, minor pin holes at intersections, otherwise very good. $300-400
