PAUL J. SEMMES (1815 - 1863) Confederate brigadier general who commanded a brigade at Seven Pines and in the Seven Days, defended Marye's Height at Fredericksburg, and was killed at the Wheatfield at Gettysburg. Exceptionally rare A.D.S. "Paul J. Semmes " with later initialed A.E.S. "PJS " at bottom, 1p. 4to., "Head Quarters City Battalion ", Columbus, July 5, 1858, headed "Order No. 1 " reading in part: "...The Commandant takes the [?] to present his acknowledgements to the various companies, for the honor done him by tendering him the command of the battalion...their sturdy appearance, discipline and good conduct. It is gratifying to know that the anniversary of the Independence of our beloved country is still cherished and observed by the citizen soldiers, that they feel it incumbent on them to make such demonstrations... ". Many of these same "citizen soldiers" would within a few years owe offer their services to their new country!
