Description:

411. SECESSION SPEECH OF ALEXANDER H. STEPHENS (1812-1883) Vice President of the Confederacy who urged moderation and negotiation with the Union. A printed copy of his speech given on Sept. 1, 1860 in Augusta, GA, during the raucous elections of 1860 which divided the Union, 16pp. 8vo., with interesting content. In small part: "...At this time, and for some months, the tendencies have been decidedly towards national disruption, and general anarchy...Can these tendencies be checked?...". Much more. Along with a carte-de-visite portrait of Stephens in civilian dress, no backstamp, in regrettably poor condition. Two pieces. $75-100
