Description:

SAMUEL L. CLEMENS
(1835 - 1910) "Mark Twain", American author of such classics as The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn, and A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court. Superb I.S.P. "Mark Twain" 10 1/2" x 14" (sight), b/w full-length portrait of Clemens in a white suit, seated on a rock holding a kitten. Inscribed to author Kate Douglas Wiggin Riggs: "To Mrs. Kate D. Riggs with the love of / Mark Twian, Jan 14 / 08". Clemens and his wife were close friends of Kate and her husband Samuel Wiggin. In a diary entry for January 1894 he recalled having lively debates on kindergarten teaching methods. Clemens also worked with Wiggin on behalf of copyright legislation to benefit American authors. Apart from Ms. Wiggin, Clemens was also a great admirer of cats and once remarked: "Of all God's creatures there is only one that cannot be made the slave of the lash. That one is the cat. If man could be crossed with the cat, it would improve man, but it would deteriorate the cat." The photograph, by Underwood & Underwood, was used as the frontispiece for the book, Concerning Cats (1959). Very minor cockling at top of photograph, else fine condition. Matted and framed. A fine association, and a fine image.
