Description:

DASHIELL HAMMETT
(1894-1961) American writer, creator of the "hard-boiled" detective genre and author of The Maltese Falcon and The Thin Man. Fine content T.L.S. "Dashiell Hammett", 1p. 4to., New York, Feb. 26, 1930 to Walter Hammett at Yale University in New Haven, CT. In part: "...I'm sending the books, duly inscribed, back to you today. Please forgive me for having held them so long, but between going through the customary pin-wheel motions incidental to ushering 'The Maltese Falcon' into public life and trying to get my next book, 'The Glass Key', finished, I've had little time for anything else. Since my begetters left England, Devonshire, for Maryland in the 17th Century, I'm afraid whatever relationship there be between us is pretty tenuous...". Boldly signed and in fine condition. Only twelve days earlier, Hammett's crime novel introducing Sam Spade was published by Alfred A. Knopf in New York. The Glass Key would be published the following year.
