Description:

SAMUEL JONES
(1819-1887) Confederate major general who commanded the Department of Western Virginia, defending the Virginia and Tennessee Railroad and the vital salt mines during the midpoint of the war. Later he commanded the district of South Carolina. Fine content, fine association war-date manuscript L.S. ‘Sam. Jones' 2pp. 4to., Charleston, June 9, 1864, on ‘Head Quarters Department of South Carolina, Georgia and Florida' letterhead to MILLEDGE L. BONHAM (1813-1890) Confederate brigadier general and later Governor of South Carolina during the war. In part: ‘…I received…your letter and referred it to Genl. [Roswell S.] Ripley for his explanation and remarks. He has returned it with an endorsement, a copy of which is herewith [not present] …It will, I am sure, satisfy you that Genl. Ripley had no intention whatever, of lightly regarding or setting as naught, the laws of the land regarding the Militia, or your authority as Governor of So Ca. I need hardly assure Your Excellency that I had no such intention. I supposed the men whose services Col. Bonneau offered has formed themselves into a voluntary local Organization for home defenses, and under the pressure then on me, I was very glad to avail myself of their services. The accompanying papers will acquaint you with all the facts of the case and will show you that Capt. Morrison's company was relieved from the duty for which it had volunteered…'. It appears that both Morrison and Bonneau were members of the same North Carolina brigade, but more is not known. Light offsetting and staining otherwise boldly signed and very good.
