SAMUEL J. GHOLSON
(1808 – 1883) U.S. Representative from Mississippi and Confederate major general of Mississippi state troops, taking part as a private in the battles of Fort Donelson, Iuka, and Corinth. Gholson was severely wounded in the December 1864 Battle of Egypt Station and lost his right arm. A.L.S. as U.S. Representative, 1p. 4to, Washington, Feb. 17, 1837 to an (indistinct) general. In part: '...Inclosed you have the answer to the Commissioner of Indian Affairs enclosing the account...there is now but 12 days left... to be devoted to the trial of Reuben M. Whitney who is now before the House for Contempt...'. Binding strip at the left margin, else fine. Whitney refused to answer a house subpoena, citing concerns about his safety in matters concerning 'The Bank War', the issue of rechartering the Second Bank of the United States. Fine condition.
