SAMUEL FRANCIS SMITH
(1808 - 1895) American clergyman and poet, author of our nation hymn "America" (1832), otherwise known as "My Country 'Tis of Thee". A.L.S. "S. F. Smith", 1p. 8vo., Newton Centre, MA, Sept. 28, 1894, to an unnamed recipient who Smith affectionately addresses as "My dear little friend", in part: "...In reply to your letter of the 27th, I must say I am unable to send you a photograph to-day, but Hardy, Washington...Boston, who took my latest, has a very good negative, and doubtless, be able to send you one...In the deficiency of a photograph, I send you an autograph of the poem [not present]...Your little poem, 'The Misdirected Valentine', is very sweet and cunning...". Though Smith's proffered poem is not named, we may speculate that it was "America." Light tape remains to to edges do not detract, overall very good condition.

Shipment is sent USPS priority, USPS International Express (for most overseas) or UPS Ground at the auctioneer's option, signature required, unless other arrangements are made. Handling, shipping and insurance charges will be added to the invoice in one entry. Buyer's should be aware that large, framed, fragile or odd shaped items can incur substantial shipping and packing charges. Customer's who supply their own courier account number will still be charged a handling fee.
