Description:

(1741 - 1811) Signer of the Declaration of Independence for Maryland, traveled with Franklin and Carroll to Canada in an attempt to secure that colony to join the rebellion, later appointed by Washington to the Supreme Court but impeached through the efforts of John Randolph. Rare great association A.L.S. 'Samuel Chase', 1p. 8vo., Baltimore. Jan. 10, 1805, to a gentleman, in part: "…Be pleased to find a subpoena for Thomas Taylor of Richmond to the Marshall [sic] of Virginia…". Folds, paper browned, otherwise boldly written and very good. Thomas Taylor (1767–1832), was a Richmond commission merchant and auctioneer. This letter was written during Chase's ongoing impeachment trial which started on February 9th, 1805. The articles brought against him involved Chase's work in lower circuit court and centered around allegations that political bias led him to treat defendants and their counsel in a blatantly unfair manner. Despite some evidence, the impeachment was set in motion for political motivations, as the Democratic-Republicans under Thomas Jefferson were wary of the power of the Supreme Court after the recent precedent of judicial review set by Marbury vs. Madison. Thomas Taylor was a friend of John Randolph of Roanoke, the lead prosecutor of the case. Chase would later be acquitted by the Senate and remains the only Supreme Court Justice ever impeached.
