ROGER SHERMAN
(1721 - 1793) American lawyer, and the only person to have signed all four early American state documents: The Continental Association, The Declaration of Independence, The Articles of Confederation, and the Constitution. Rare and excellent association A.L.S. referencing two Connecticut Signers, 1p. 8 x 10 in., Fairfield, Nov. 16, 1781, a rather forgiving letter concerning the legal fees of a struggling client. In part: 'Immediately after the adjournment of the last Supreme Court of Errors, I wrote to Mr. [Samuel] Huntington, advising him of the unfortunate result of his case. At that time the bill of cost, and some other expences, were not ascertained. Mr. Edwards as you have been informed, commenced a suit in Chancery, and both suits have occasioned a large amount of charges. My fees amount to…$227.83 in the whole…The Bill of Asa Chapman Esq'r whom I engaged in the Superior Court as assistant Counsel is 87 Dollars...on consultation with him, we have agreed on amount of the unfortunate issue of the case to abate 25 percent each on our bills of fees...as much as you can conveniently forward to me by mail will be gratefully acknowledged...' SAMUEL HUNTINGTON (1731-1796) signed the Declaration of Independence alongside Sherman as a delegate from Connecticut, and later served as president of the Continental Congress, and as Governor of Connecticut. During this period, Huntington was an appointee of the Supreme Court of Errors. Mounted, matted, and framed to an overall size of 14.75 x 16.75 in. In fine condition, save for an abrasion to the top center, and a small hole to the bottom. Excellent for display.

Shipments are sent via FedEx and DHL (for most overseas shipments) or FedEx Ground at the auctioneer's option. Due to complications from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we will ship with USPS Priority Mail only if the buyer submits their request to us in writing and accepts responsibility for delayed shipments. Signature is always required, unless other arrangements are made. Handling and shipping charges will be added to the invoice in one entry. Buyers should be aware that large, framed, fragile or odd shaped items can incur substantial shipping and packing charges. International shipments are invoiced by DIMENSIONAL weight, not the item weight. Please contact us for an estimate before bidding NOTE: Large, heavy or bulky items may not be shipped by the auctioneer - arrangements for shipping of these items via a third-party shipper may be arranged through the auction house. Customers who supply their own courier account number will still be charged a handling fee. Please allow 2-3 weeks for shipments after receipt of payment due to the high volume of packages being shipped.
