SAMUEL ALLEN RICE
(1828 - 1864) Union General who commanded the 33rd Iowa. Opened the Yazoo River for navigation and commanded a brigade at Helena, Arkansas. Appointed a Brigadier General of Volunteers in August 1863, he died from a wound to his ankle at Jenkins' Ferry Arkansas in 1864. Rare war-date A.L.S. "Allen 2pp. 4to., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Aug. 26, 1861 to his brother Gen. ELLIOTT W. RICE (1835 - 1887). He writes, in full: "Your letter in regard to your things sent home duly received -- I hope you have kept a bill - You certainly have send a good lot home -- You have never answered my letter to you at Burlington -- We are very well -- Nothing of interest - No Philip yet - Rather Strange that Philip should delay so long - Have no word from Martinville relatives since you left - Do you hear from Mother -- No business in the office of any account -- No court for want of a Judge -- when Philip comes will talk to him about your interest continuing &c... Want any how to keep your name in the firm so when you return you can come in -- Will make some arrangement on the matter any how-- I hope you will make yourself one of the boys and make them feel you are one of them and not above them - I will write you again in a day or so - have a Stye on my eye & hardly able to see & little in the humor of writing now ". With original tranmsittal envlope addressed in his hand. His brother had been recently appointed a Major after joining the 7th Iowa as a corporal in July 1861. Partial fold separations, else very good to fine condition.
