Description:

DANIEL RUGGLES
(1810 - 1897) Confederate brigadier general who led a corps at Shiloh, later serving under Bragg, Van Dorn, and Joseph E. Johnston. Mexican War-date A.L.S. 1p. lg. 8vo., "City of Mexico", Nov. 23, 1847, a formal letter of protestation addressed to Col. John M. Geary (later a Union general), regarding the matter of "one-up-man-ship" that Ruggles finds irritating. He complains, in part: "…I have the honor in the act of changing my seat to reiterate before this body, my protest against the assignment of Capt. C. R. Gold of the 8th Infy. to a seat above me on this commission according to his Brevet rank, as an arbitrary act of power unknown to the laws of the U. States, and the established usage of the service, and to express my regret that the Commanding General [Winfield Scott] while adhering to such a decision, has felt constrained to refuse my request to be excused from sitting as a member in accordance with it…". Very light mounting strip to left edge, otherwise very good condition.
