SAMUEL D. INGHAM (1779 - 1869) Secretary of the Treasury under Andrew Jackson, labored to resolve conflicts between Jackson, who wanted the Bank of the United States destroyed, and the Bank's president, Nicholas Biddle. Fine content A.L.S., 1p. 12mo., [Washington], Apr. 15, 1832 to retired Secretary of the Navy JOHN BRANCH. In part: "...the 'hand of force' is being introduced here. Stanberry had made some addition[?] to the Indian contract - Sam Houston wrote to him demanding to know whether he [?] the remarks reported in the papers...Houston it seems had threatened violence and had been on the look out for him...He saw S. coming across the street...and with a blow from a heavy bludgeon brought him to the ground & repeated his blows till S. was quite disabled...bones of his left hand broken...the matter was brought before the House for breach of privilege and after a long debate 140 to 25 vote to oust Houston, who is now in custody to be arraigned at the bar tomorrow. Tis said he had sworn he would kill Duff Green and Prentiss[?] before he returned..." Fine condition. Congressman William Stanbery alleged that Houston had placed a fraudulent bid in 1830 in collusion with the Jackson administration. After Stanbery refused to answer Houston's letters regarding the incident, Houston beat Stanbery with a cane. The House of Representatives brought Houston to trial, convicting him by a vote of 106 to 89. He was formally reprimanded and ordered to pay $500 in damages.
