JOHN BRANCH (1782–1863) U.S. Senator, Secretary of the Navy, the 19th Governor of the state of North Carolina, and was the sixth and last territorial governor of Florida. Branch resigned as Jackson's Secretary of the Navy as a result of the "Petticoat Scandal" incited by the wife of John C. Calhoun. Fairly large group of correspondence, about 35 pieces ca. 1830-45, along with a few newspapers, all sent or pertaining to JOHN BRANCH. Wide range of topics including letters of support sent to him during the "Petticoat Scandal", the border dispute between Florida and Georgia and appointment of commissioners, political scheming and adversaries with much mention of Jackson and Van Buren, personal attacks, profits from the sale of cotton crops, a letter of thanks from Florida Supreme Court member Walker Anderson, notes on waste in the Navy (received while Branch was Sec'y of the Navy), banking matters, newspapermen, office seekers, sale of cotton gins, invitations to events honoring Branch, religion, etc., with a few period newspapers. Largely unresearched, should be seen.

International shipments are invoiced by DIMENSIONAL weight, not the item weight. Please contact us for an estimate before bidding NOTE: Large, heavy or bulky items may not be shipped by the auctioneer - arrangements for shipping of these items via a third-party shipper may be arranged through the auction house. Customers who supply their own courier account number will still be charged a handling fee. Please allow 2-3 weeks for shipments after receipt of payment due to the high volume of packages being shipped.
