(1652 1730) Massachusetts judge who presided over the Salem witch trials, and the only one of the judges who publicly admitted his error. Scarce A.E.S. on a manuscript D.S., 1p. 12mo., Boston, June 2, 1911 approving expenses for the April and May sessions of the Court of Common Pleas held in Boston, in full: "June 2, 1711. allowed Four pounds, one shilling and ten pence Pr Samuel Sewall.". These May accounts also bear the certifying signature of ELISHA COOKE, JR. (1678-1737) as clerk of the court. Light toning, else fine condition.
