456. RUNAWAYSLAVE REWARD POSTER An excellent runaway slave reward poster, 11" x 12",Fairfax Co., Virginia, Apr. 7, 1855 and printed by "The Fairfax CountyNews" for slave owner Chas. W. Turley. It reads in part: "$150 Reward!RANAWAY, FROM THE SUBSCRIBER, NEAR PLEASANT VALLEY, FAIRFAX CO. Friday, the 23rdday of March, 1855, MY NEGRO MAN, NAMED ARCH! He is about twenty years of age,and is nearly six feet in height. He may be considered a WHITE NEGRO, havingstraight, flax-colored hair, black eyes and a down look when spoken to. He hadon when he left a fulled cloth box coat, a lead-colored wool hat, and pants ofdark plaid cassimer. He may since have changed his dress. Fifty dollars REWARDwill be paid if apprehended in any County in the State, or one hundred and fiftyif taken out of the State...". A few miniscule holes in text, negligibleshow-through from a line of text on verso, tipped to a backing else very good.Apparently, Arch made good his escape, as a form of this advertisement wasrunning in the Alexandria Gazette as late as May 7, 1855. This is the firstreward poster we have seen for such a light-skinned slave, and we have neverseen the term "white negro" used before. $3,000 - 4,000
