Description:

ROSWELL S. RIPLEY
(1823 - 1887) Confederate brigadier general who commanded Forts Moultrie and Sumter, later led a brigade at Antietam and joined Johnston at war's end. War-date A.L.S. of Head Quarters, Provisional Forces letterhead, 2pp. 4to., Charleston, Oct. 23, 1861 to Gov. Francis W. Pickens. Ripley corrects a message sent by a captain to Pickens stating that authorization had been given for the formation of five additional companies - in fact, only one company had been approved. He also makes a veiled complaint that the governor continues to suggest that cavalry and light artillery companies be sent to Beaufort, Edist, and elsewhere. Ripley complains that they simply are not prepared: "...in fact the whole command is but simply recruits, partially armed & in bad condition...". Very good.
